After the rain, the last drops fall as the sun shines with ferocity.



Small changes in shutterspeed have a huge impact on how the raindrops look. Generally, 1/60 is about as low as you want to go before losing any recognizable rain patterns, and maybe 1/800 as high before the rain just looks out of focus neither sharp nor streaks. This was shot at 1/320. Perhaps 1/250 would have been optimal.

These train tracks only have one or two trains per hour. Usually I wait in vain and the moment is gone. On this occasion there were two trains minutes apart going in opposite directions. Now, only to complete the picture a bird or two could be flying in the sky.

Shooting into the sun is generally advised against, but there is a 15 minute window or so, where you can work with the reflections on the water and still get some light on your subject. Had to drop the brightness sliders all the way down and the shadows all the way up, push the clarity and dehaze pretty hard and a graduated filter for the reflected trees on the bottom. I also tried to get a color I was happy, wanted something more yellowish than orange.

Canada Goose Skirmish - 1st shot is in the middle of the action, look at all 6 to the whole action! The light was pretty low, about 15 minutes after sunset. A group of geese had been there the whole afternoon and I was about to pack it all up but then another group came floating down out of the twilight, and then it was a zoo, with the geese squawking and braying.

If I was better at Photoshop, I could make the image pop even more, but with Photoshop you run the risk of making the image perfect but somehow taking the life out of it.

If a tree falls... Over the weekend, some big trees were cut down in the Rheinpark. This photo was taken a week or two ago. I don't know a 100 percent if this particular tree was cut down or not but it gives you an idea of just how impressive they are.

30 second exposure, zooming in every 5 or 6 seconds. A little anecdote, a Karnevalsitzung had just finished, and people were walking by, in various stages of inebriation. While I was taking this shot, two women were interested in what I was doing and I showed them the resulting picture. They waked away without a word, seemingly disappointed, me killing their buzz. Later, I was thinking, if I were drunk and saw something like this, I would be wondering just how drunk was I 😂

The last week or so there have been many foggy nights. On this night, however, the fog was rolling over the Rhine, so that the top of the Dom is in view but not the bottom. And of course the fog saturating the bridge was something to behold.

Seagulls swarming in the fog over the Dom. Technically, a challenging shot. I used 1/50 of a second, as a compromise to keeping the iso at 3200, f2.8. 1/40 and the Seagulls are blurbs and 1/60 just too dark, noisy. Guess one of those fast primes 105mm 1.4 or 135mm 1.8 could have gotten a cleaner shot. But the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8g is a wizard at focusing, especially in low light.
